Clearing out your Makeup Bag

Clearing out your makeup bag / draw can be hard. I know from my own experience recently it was tough throwing away that expensive (yet hardly used) YSL eyeshadow palette. I had owned it for well over two years and these things don't last. I’ve also found all of my old college textbooks which is the reason I was spurred on to having a clear out. One particular reason for sorting through my makeup is bacteria! It's impossible to get away from, once you start using a product its there. This then transfers to your face, eyes and lips…..yuk! So below I’ve done a breakdown of when it is time to say goodbye to your products.

Mascara - 3 months
Liquid Eyeliner - 6 months
Foundation (Liquid / Cream) - 6 - 12 months
Pencils (Eye / Lip) - 6 - 12 months
Lipgloss - 1 year
Concealer - 1 year
Nail Polish - 2 years
Lipstick - 2 years
Powders / Eyeshadow / Bronzer / Blush - 2 years

This is a general list and is widely available online when you do a search for the life expectancy of makeup products. It’s best to check the packaging as some brands last longer than the list above. I tend to keep a notepad in my makeup draw with the product name and date I’ve opened it. I can then monitor how long I’ve had something knocking around for.
Mascara and liquid liner I never keep past its use by date; it worries me using that sort of product near my eyes if they are harboring germs on them. This rule I use for concealer too as my skin can be spot prone at times. Also a good tip for pencils is to make sure your sharpen them before every use, that way your minimizing the chance of any bacteria transferring from the product.

I hope this was helpful xx
